Abundant apple tree with ripe red and green apples in warm golden sunlight - a reflection on natural imperfection and what it means to be human

What My Apple Tree Reminded Me About Being Human

🌻 Perhaps we were never supposed to be perfect

I was making my porridge this morning.

I have apple in my porridge, and in my garden I have a very old apple tree. And this year, that tree is abundant with apples.

I have apples everywhere. My neighbours have got them. They’re in my fridge. And I’m eating rather a lot of them.

But I’ve noticed something about these apples.

Every single one seems to have some sort of blemish.

Some look a bit bruised on the outside, but when you cut into them, they’re absolutely perfect.

Some look beautiful on the outside, but when you cut them open, they’re really not very nice at all.

Some are completely infested.

And every now and then, you get one that seems just about perfect.

🌻 Real apples aren’t perfect

So why am I telling you about my breakfast and a load of apples?

Because it got me thinking.

When we go to the supermarket, we see rows of perfect apples. They’ve been selected, sprayed, manicured and presented to us in a way that takes some of the nature out of them.

But when you have a real tree, growing real apples in a garden, nature looks rather different.

And it struck me how much this is like being human.

Through the news, social media, and the world around us, we’re presented with images of what it is to be a successful human being. What our bodies should look like. How our lives should look. How our minds should work. How successful we should be.

Somehow, we’ve got this idea that we’re supposed to get it all right.

🌻 Perhaps we’re not supposed to be perfect either

I’ve just come back from a fabulous retreat at Spirit Horse in wild mid Wales. It’s off-grid, and I’ve been going there for Enlightenment Intensives for several years now.

One of the things those experiences have shown me is that, just like the apples, every single one of us has something going on.

We’re all carrying things that we’re working with as we grow.

It might be past karma. It might be family conditioning. It might be ancestral. It might be something else entirely.

But whatever is here for you right now is what’s true for you right now.

And when we take our attention away from what’s actually true in us and start striving to be something different, or judging ourselves because we think we should be different, perhaps that’s when we start adding more layers of angst and pain on top of what is already there.

🌻 We all have our thing

Because we all have our thing.

It doesn’t matter what we look like from the outside.

Someone might look like the most beautiful, shiny person on the planet and still be carrying enormous pain.

Someone else might look as though they’ve done quite a few rounds with hardship and actually be more at peace than any of us realise.

We simply don’t know.

I suppose the learning for me is about trying not to judge ourselves.

Trying to have compassion for ourselves for where we are in this moment and whatever brought us here.

We don’t necessarily have to analyse it.

Sometimes it can simply be:

This is where I am right now.

There’s a part of me in pain.

There’s a part of me experiencing joy.

There’s a part of me struggling.

There’s a part of me that feels completely at peace.

And rather than immediately trying to change it, perhaps we can let ourselves experience what’s actually here.

🌻 What’s true for me right now?

And if we are having a difficult time, maybe the question becomes:

How can I nurture myself?

How can I make the best of this moment?

One of my wonderful teachers often says that today is on loan to us.

We don’t know what is coming tomorrow.

That’s something I’m sitting with at the moment, and something I wanted to share.

I’m not telling anyone what to do or how to live. This is only my experience and my opinion.

But if something in my experience gives you something to think about or contemplate about what’s going on for you right now, then wonderful.

🌻 Today is on loan to us

The world is changing enormously, and I feel we’re being drawn more and more into our own hearts.

First and foremost, for ourselves.

And I don’t believe that’s selfish.

Because when we give from a full cup, we can truly give without attachment to the outcome.

When we give with expectations because it has really cost us to give, because we were already giving from an empty cup, perhaps that’s where we can end up layering even more pain on top.

None of this is meant to sound doom and gloom.

Quite the opposite.

It’s simply a reminder that we all have our things that we’re working through.

There’s nothing wrong with any of us.

And maybe when we nurture ourselves, look after ourselves, and begin to accept the parts of us that don’t look like the shiny version we think we’re “supposed” to be, our own lives become a little more peaceful.

🌻 A little more peace

And if each of us can create a little more peace within ourselves, then maybe, just maybe, we create a little more peace in the world too.

I hope so.

And I hope this has given you something to sit with as we move through a world experiencing such enormous change.
